MIDDLE EAST vs UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.... No wonder there is a complicated matter.. check out some of the facts and opinions..--->
The development until 1980.
After world war one the Ottoman Empire comes to an end.
League of Nations decides that the three provinces from the Ottoman Empire; Mosul, Bagdad and Basra should be a nation called Iraq under British supervision.
• 1921 Prince Faisal is chosen to become the king of Iraq.
• 1932 Iraq becomes an independent state.
• Several military coups during the 30’s (occurred seven times)
• 1958 Iraq becomes a republic under reign of Abdul Karim Kassem.
• 1963 Abdul Karim Kassem is overthrown and executed. The Bath Party grows in numbers.
• 1968 The Bath Party takes the power
• 1969 Saddam Hussein takes over the power.
• 1980 war with Iran.
Saddam Hussein invaded Iran and started a war that lasted for eight years. Hussein worried about the Islam fundamentalism, which was lead by Ayatollah Khomeni he also wanted to take control of Iran’s oil supply. The war was backed up by USA and the administration of Reagan. USA delivered weapons and helped out with military advisors. USA had had good relations with Iran during the shah period. The supply to the oil was the main point.
USA supported Iraq even with the knowledge that Saddam used chemical warfare agents both against Kurds and against Iraqis. He was a ruthless dictator.
USA also gave Iran military support even though they backed up Iraq. USA sold weapons to Iran and the profits was delivered to the “Contras” in Nicaragua. (Iran Contras affairs)
The war ended 1988 with truce and both sides nominated themselves as winners. The war had been devastating for Iraq because 150 000 were killed and 750 000 injured on top of this the economy was equal to zero. Saddam Hussein attacked Kuwait 1990. He then claimed that Kuwait was a province of Iraq and that the oil belonged to Iraq.
UN wrote a resolution that condemned the invasion of Kuwait and made economic sanctions to Iraq. This resulted in starvation, high rates of dying children, but Iraq refused to leave Kuwait.
In the beginning of 1991 under American management a war to pull out Iraqis from Kuwait took form. The war ended when Kuwait was liberated, but they didn’t invade Iraq. In the meantime the Shia Muslims in the south and the Kurds in the north revolts against Saddam Hussein. Both revolts were knocked down, the economic sanctions against Iraq continue and the people suffer. Saddam agrees on trading oil for exchanging food and medicine, he also agrees that the UN weapon inspectors are allowed to search Iraq if it has nuclear weapons.
The 11th September 2001 World Trade center was attacked in New York. USA, George Bush then announced war against “terrorism”. USA also demands a change in the ruling system in Iraq.
However, USA could not prove any connections between Osama Bin Laden and Saddam Hussein. Hussein was against fundamentalism but USA claimed that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction and proceed that it is a threat to the world peace. Together with England they prepared the war. The war began 2003 and Iraq was occupied and Saddam is executed. They did not find any mass destructive weapons. The war started with weak evidence. USA believed that if Saddam Hussein was overthrown they could build up a new democracy after a western model in Iraq. It is not that easy, democracy in the world has grown under a long period time. In Iraq there are tensions after Saddam Hussein disappeared. Shia Muslims, Sunny Muslims, Kurds wanted access to land and oil supply.
USA had no idea on what should be done after the war was won. Through their actions they have turned the world community against themselves and the war has created Muslim hatred towards USA. They have not had any success in the war against “terrorism”. Osama Bin Laden continues to operate from Afghanistan and Pakistan. The solution on the Palestine issue has not happened yet. The hunt for oil has been shattering.
The hope now depends on the new American president Barack Obama.
